TLC – Creep

The year was 1994. Three aspiring stars from the sweltering Atlanta sun, who just so happened to be one of hip-hop’s biggest sensations, were about to become one of music’s most massive successes. I’ll take “Easy Jeopardy answers for $200, Alex.” Yes I’m talking about none other than TLC and their groovemaker “Creep” for this throwback post.

On the heels of the strong debut Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilii would become household names thanks to the chart dominating CrazySexyCool and its lineup of hit after hit. But none was cooler, smoother, sexier than their lead single, the aforementioned ‘Creep.’ A song about infidelity written from the female perspective, the track oozes with R&B appeal while incorporating elements of jazz, soul, and boom bap. But it’s the trio’s compelling sensuality and honest outpouring that carry the cut in the end.

And of course an arrangement that carnal needs a visual accompaniment to match, so what better way to showcase the song’s intimate nature than with an iconic display of silk. You won’t soon forget the three women dancing around in their finest monochrome pajamas will you?

Decades later, the tunes are still flowing. Last month the now duo collaborated with Snoop Dogg on the old school jam “Way Back,” a refreshing take on the sound that propelled the group to stardom in the first place.
