Talk Show Host – Perfectly Competent EP

You know, whatever happened to the pop-punk powerhouses of a generation ago? They dominated the mainstream for years, but just like a pair of skinny denims they faded away. Luckily enough, there are still believers out there, like Toronto’s Talk Show Host, tapping into that melodic discordance.

The up-and-coming three-piece with one EP already under their belt are back with their sophomore effort Perfectly Competent, a misnomer if there ever was one. Self-produced this go-round, the four tracks glow with clear influences of past greats but thrives through a contemporary sheen that distinguishes itself as a wholly unique project.

“I Don’t Wanna Go To The Library,” a quick-hitter of a lead track, infuses fast-paced riffs with sensible vocals to set the tone of what’s to come. Clear stand out for me “Lost and Found” builds on the prior cuts tonal elements but one ups it with some well-timed harmonies and a slightly skewed pacing. Tail tracks “108” and “Franklin” show off the band’s subtler side, each rolling back the energy a tick while still providing a healthy dose of sonic grit and grandeur.
